Hospice Care
A Guide to How the Medicare
Hospice Benefit Works for You
Participating in the Medicare Hospice Benefit is simply a matter of electing it. The Hospice Benefit takes the place of Medicare Part A coverage for services related to the terminal illness. Part A Coverage remains intact for services not related to the terminal illness.
Medicare Part B (physician services) is not affected and continues as normal.
The Medicare Hospice Benefit is available for two 90-day periods, and subsequent 60 day periods thereafter.
Hospice services may be discontinued at any time, either by the patient or family, or because of an improved prognosis. When this happens, Medicare Part A coverage resumes, and the remaining days in the current Hospice Benefit period are forfeited. The benefit may be started if needed at a later date.
